Why GIFs are so big — and how to shrink them
- Fewer colours: GIF stores a palette per image. Dropping from 256 to 128 or 64 colours can cut size a lot with little visible change on simple graphics.
- Smaller dimensions: scaling a GIF down reduces the pixels in every frame, which is the biggest size win.
- Fewer/shorter frames: trimming a long GIF removes whole frames of data.
Getting the best result
Start by lowering the colour count and watching the size drop; flat, cartoon-style GIFs tolerate aggressive reduction, while photographic GIFs need more colours. If it’s still too big, scale the dimensions down. For very long or photographic clips, converting to a video format will always beat an optimized GIF.
